The spiritual teacher George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1877-1949) arrived in Moscow and St. Petersburg after a long odyssey through the monasteries and hidden esoteric schools of the Middle and Far East. Gurdjieff had been driven by his all-consuming question: What is the sense and purpose of life on Earth, and particularly, of human life? This quest gradually brought him the ancient knowledge he carried to the West.
